Pants out! This autumn's fashion hit is showing your underwear. Men with boxers peeking out of their pants are supposedly extremely sexy
Not only about fashion, but also about what exactly adds to a person's attractiveness could be quite fervently discussed. However, on one of the most popular discussion forums - Reddit - the debaters are clear: a man in his underwear is much sexier than a naked man. Of course, even a clothed man can apparently indulge in a bit of that sexiness, at least by letting the elastic of his shorts "come out" of his pants. How sexy!
Where did the shorts trend come from?
Although a number of different trends nowadays come from the social networking environment and TikTok is a bottomless well of ideas (albeit often completely absurd), this time the users of the "sock" are completely innocent. The novelty comes (perhaps surprisingly for some) straight from the fashionable piers. For example, at Virgil Abloh's last show for Louis Vuitton, models sported white scalloped boxers peeking out above thick belts and monograms. Balenciaga had a similar concept for its show - at the time, the brand's briefs "peeked out" from the jeans. Miu Miu also displayed lingerie. However, since this trend is not exactly a hit in terms of looks and probably not ideal in terms of comfort, Dior offered a charming alternative: sweatpants with two waistbands. One regular and the other "fake", which on the outside looks just like underwear. Well, that's what you call a truly creative approach. Only while in the previous cases it will be enough to tuck the shorts back in (when the trend takes over), in Dior's sweatpants (even if they are cashmere) you will still look like you were dressing after a hangover and you missed certain details...
A trend a bit out of necessity?
The underwear display is said to be a nod to hip-hop culture and a fashionable revival of the legacy of such names as Tupac and Busta Rhymes. And it's also supposedly a celebration of black culture in a way that feels authentic and organic. But then there's another aspect of this new fashion. Logomania and its evolution. In fact, shorts peeking out of pants is, according to some, a new way to show off a brand when it's not so cool to wear shirts anymore. Logo shorts are actually a more moderate form of the "branded" t-shirt. Yet it's quite understandable - when one invests in branded underwear, one surely likes to show it off too. But if it's hidden under layers of other clothing, it's unlikely to be appreciated by others. It's de facto taking the philosophy of Andy Warhol, who is said to have worn diamonds underneath his turtlenecks - to make him feel beautiful on the inside. Today's men use... briefs and boxers instead of diamonds just to feel beautiful. But against taste...
In the end, though, necessity seems to be the most sensible explanation for why men should suddenly take to the streets in the style of a smart mountain woman - dressed/un-dressed. After all, over the last few years fashion houses have steadily expanded the cut of men's trousers to the point of virtual excess. As a result, the market is flooded with trousers that usually give the impression that they will practically fall down to their wearer's ankles in the next few seconds. So, in fact, one cannot help wondering whether the protruding underwear is more a result of the fact that big (albeit very fashionable) trousers are sliding off men's hips on their own, rather than being a matter of thoughtful styling.
Sexy, sexy, sexy!
But while some will shake their heads in disbelief at the new fashion trend, those who wear a T-shirt tucked into a pair of briefs whose top hem clearly peeks above the waistband of the trousers are supposedly just plain sexy. And this is unmistakably a major shift in how male sex appeal is perceived in today's culture. This is because up until now it has received a fairly uniform depiction in the form of close-ups of sweaty male muscles. And much media content has laboriously teetered on the edge of what is still acceptably sexy and what belongs on PornHub. So if showing your shorts is going to be the new type of chaste appeal, why not (after all, it's the imagination that's most "racy"!).
In the end, the shorts turn in men's fashion is actually not surprising. Even in women's fashion, revealing underwear is very trendy. Of course, it's a question of who exactly finds other people's underwear on display on the tram extra sexy, but on the other hand, we can imagine that a pair of boxers that peek out gently through their logo, winking slightly at a date, will make them want to explore what's underneath. Because if the red Ferrari is no longer on the table, the logo on the underpants counts too...
