Jeans with holes, mini bags, bicycle shorts and other fashion trends to give up quickly in the New Year
One can, of course, have different opinions about the changing fashion. While some may literally go overboard to ensure that only the hottest pieces are in their wardrobes, others rely on creative mixing and matching or even shopping at thrift stores. None of this is a major transgression, but especially those who are truly fashionable and try to buy every new thing that hits the catwalks should also take care to get rid of what is no longer trendy. And the fact is that the coming year will please many - fashion stylists agree that it's time to give up not only the totally impractical tote bags, but also jeans withholes (glory, the homeless look will be passé), but also cycling shorts, which have literally risen like the mythical Phoenix from the ashes to overwhelm the streets of city centres... and make them into impromptu "sports grounds"... But many other former fashion hits will also take their turn.
1. Bags
Although we don't like diminutives much, in this case you really can't call the hit of 2020 anything else. People have become literally obsessed with micro and mini bags (ironically, this applies to both women and men), where almost no credit card can fit. But according to fashion experts, the coming year will instead bring with it an emphasis on practicality and functionality, ideally so that individual pieces can be used more variably. And mini bags are, plain and simple, completely useless. And since not infrequently fashion moves from extreme to extreme, according to personal stylist Bree Jacoby ¨it's time to get maxi bags, large satchels, totes, or outright bags and suitcases on wheels instead.
Interestingly enough, the stylists say we should also give up on oversized purses. While these would fall into the "maxi" concept, the same cannot be said for practicality and functionality. For it is clear - and the covid era has emphasised this - that the world is becoming increasingly cashless. So it makes no sense to carry around a large wallet stuffed with small coins when the only thing one needs is a credit card (and many people store this in a mobile phone case). For documents, all you have to do is get an adequate case.
2. Torn jeans
Loved by some, hated by others - that's exactly what jeans with holes are. Often to such an extent that the trousers barely hold together and one pays for the holes rather than for them. And it is the detractors of this piece who can now rejoice. After more than a decade of the trend's popularity, the days of the holey jean seem to be numbered. "People have started to edit their wardrobes to include only the essentials. And ripped denim isn't as versatile as other styles," says Jacoby. And the truth is, it's minimalism and the drive to reduce the amount of clothing in storage that's becoming more common. What to replace the jeans with holes? A pair of jeans in a classic clean cut that's wearable practically day or night can never be a mistake.
3. Neon colours and "mint"
For the first time, neon colors took center stage in fashion in 2016. But as stylists agree, this trend has been fading significantly over time, and the full spectrum of these vibrant colors should be reserved for situations such as cycling, or simply activities where being seen is necessary. Thus, in 2021, fashion experts no longer expect neon colours to "pull". What to replace them with? Ideally for a variety of bright patterns and prints.
But the same as for neon colours also applies to the "mint trend", i.e. clothes in the colour of peppermint (i.e. light green). Given the aforementioned new emphasis on practicality, it's clear that mint pieces need to be gotten rid of quickly. Although the colour was very refreshing when it burst into wardrobes, most people have trouble figuring out how to mix and match it.
4. The end of cheetahs in fashion
Animal prints are one of the most talked about in the fashion world. They have their die-hard fans, but on the other side are those who hate them with all their hearts. Yet this year in particular, cheetah prints seemed to be making a comeback, especially after the Duchess of Cambridge appeared in public wearing a cheetah skirt earlier this year. However, every trend has its peak and it seems that the cheetah pattern is already descending significantly from it. So animal prints can finally be sent into fashion retirement.
5. Cycling shorts
Much has been written about elasticated bike shorts. But to sum up all the fashion escapades of this controversial item in one sentence: cycling shorts are suitable for cycling. So although Princess Diana had already scored in short leggings, when this strange trend returned this year, many shook their heads at the combination of cycling fashion with pumps or space sneakers with enormous soles. But perhaps humanity has wised up in this regard, at least. Cycling shorts will therefore be consigned to their proper limits in 2021, i.e. for the bike, but also for use in sports, or to wear skirts more comfortably (especially appreciated by women with a few extra pounds...).
6. Transparent materials
This year seems to be marked by various transparent materials. Whether it was lace, mesh or something similar, women and men alike enjoyed the opportunity to show almost everything this year. However, as it turned out, keeping these materials "in shape" is quite a challenge. Not to mention that a mesh shirt may be a hit on the red carpet, but not so much on the boardroom carpet. Simply put - different transparent materials require the right style, occasion and lighting. So unless you're a high-class star strutting your stuff at a premiere or gala, put away the transparent pieces and try silk or satin...
In conclusion, however, one thing is fashion trends and another is comfort and individual taste. So if you feel comfortable in cycling shorts and a phosphorus orange shirt, the fashion dictates should pass you by. Even if you're not going on a bike trip...
