The average Czech has three relationships and ten sexual partners, a survey shows. But the virtual world is rewriting the rules of intimacy
Almost half of Czechs watch pornography, but their approach to sex remains rather conservative. Men have an average of thirteen sexual partners, women seven, and although 44% of the population is already familiar with the OnlyFans platform, most are embarrassed by it. This is according to new research by the NMS agency, which was created for the launch of the documentary Virtual Girlfriend by director Barbara Chalupova (In the Net).
A conservative nation with a liberal facade
According to the Sexual Liberality Index, Czechs are rather restrained in their attitude to sexuality - almost half (46%) fall into the conservative group, while only 15% of the population hold liberal attitudes. Women have a more conservative approach to sex, while men are more open to casual relationships and non-committal sex. There is also a significant generational difference between millennials and Gen Z: the youngest generation is more reserved than the previous one, more likely to associate sex with emotional attachment and to reject non-committal relationships.
"The more conservative attitudes of the young may be related to the fact that they have less experience. But it may also be a defensive reaction to the overload of hypersexualized content that surrounds them," explains NMS research director Jakub Bakule in an accompanying report.
Almost half of Czechs are already familiar with OnlyFans, but only a fraction are paying
44% of Czechs are familiar with the OnlyFans platform, with men and people from Generation Z being the most aware - up to 88% of them have heard of it. Approximately 2.5% of the population, or about 200,000 people, mostly men, have an account on the platform. However, according to their own words, only a minimum of them pay for the content.
The most famous Czech creator is Xholakys, known to 6% of the population, mainly young men. And although more than half of those who know about OnlyFans can imagine a friendship or closer relationship with its creator, the social acceptability of this work remains low - only 28% of people consider it "okay" to earn money by selling erotic content.
Gen Z: conservative views, but also the potential for revolution
An interesting paradox is emerging with Generation Z. While it is the most conservative of all when it comes to sexual issues, it is also the one that is shaping a new wave of women who are thinking about content creation. One in 11 women from this generation (9%) admitted they would consider joining OnlyFans.
"In an era where the line between personal and public life is blurring, erotic content has become not only a form of self-expression, but also a symbol of control over one's own body. That's why young women are considering it, even though society perceives it as contradictory," Bakule comments.
The sex life of Czechs in numbers
The average Czech has three serious relationships and ten sexual partners in his or her lifetime. The majority of the population (76%) is in some type of relationship, a fifth are single - most often young men and older women. 58% of people have sex regularly, most among millennials.
Pornography is viewed by 44% of the population, and men are up to 3.5 times more likely than women to have sex. The majority of Czechs have a neutral or positive attitude towards porn actors and creators of erotic content, indicating a gradual destigmatisation of the industry.
Virtual girlfriends as a mirror of reality
The NMS research was produced on the occasion of the premiere of the documentary Virtual Girlfriends, which follows the lives of three Czech female OnlyFans creators and explores how the platform has transformed the view of intimacy, relationships and female autonomy. The film by Barbara Chalupova, known for her award-winning documentary In the Net, opens up passionate debates about what intimacy means today - and whether real relationships can be replaced by virtual proximity.
