Prague as the capital of pleasure. Did you know that the heart of Europe is home to the giants of the erotic industry?
On the map of Europe you can recognize it by its castle, beer and trams. But underneath this romantic facade is a whispered-about business with a global reach. Prague is now the unofficial centre of the European porn industry. And it's not a myth. The city is home to two of the world's biggest adult platforms, hundreds of productions a year, and the whole scene is now facing pressure from Brussels. How is it that the Czech Republic has the reputation of being the "porn city of Europe"?
The law has passed, the market has taken off
After the Velvet Revolution, Czech society breathed freedom - including sexual freedom. Pornography, which had previously been banned, was given a clear legal framework. Only child material and violence remained banned, but otherwise everything was open. And an open market also meant open opportunity. While elsewhere in Europe pornography faced unclear rules, in the Czech Republic it became a normal business. Unlike underground productions, filming here was legal, fast and cheap. Indeed, it was a combination that producers from Germany, France or the USA quickly fell in love with.
Hollywood of the East - and its darker corners
Prague has something that even Western Europe envies: a strong film infrastructure. From Barrandov to smaller studios, equipped crews, experienced cameramen, post-production, locations and equipment. Productions that have come here for "mainstream" films have also found the perfect backdrop for adult content. And Prague proved to be the perfect backdrop - anonymous but beautiful. It can be luxurious and ordinary, European and universal. Apartments in tenements, apartment blocks and historic interiors serve as scenes that can be transformed in a matter of hours.
Moreover, from a production perspective, low costs are key. Filming here is cheaper than in Paris or London, and thanks to Schengen, crews and performers from all over the continent can easily get here. Combined with film know-how, this has created one of the most natural clusters of the European adult business.
Digital heart: the headquarters of global platforms
Most people don't know it, but Prague is home to the operators of two of the world's biggest porn websites - XVideos and XNXX, both operated by Czech companies WebGroup Czech Republic and NKL Associates. And this is unique even on a global scale.
These companies are not just mailboxes - according to EU regulatory documents and US courts, they actually have their headquarters in Prague. This means that much of Europe's internet traffic with pornographic content - from IT infrastructure to billing - is run directly from the Czech Republic. When producers, technicians, distributors and platforms meet in the same city, business accelerates. And the money stays at home.
The gay scene, VR and Prague's openness
The porn industry has many faces in the Czech Republic. The most visible one historically is the gay scene. Studio BelAmi, which started in Bratislava and expanded to Prague, has become a household name around the world. Alongside it there are many smaller brands that take advantage of the openness and professionalism here.
And while content was once exclusively for cameras, today new technologies are coming into play . Prague has a strong VR community and companies that develop virtual reality or work with AI. Many of them are also testing formats for adult audiences - from 360° videos to interactive experiences. It's no coincidence. Technological openness, game developers and relative anonymity make Prague the perfect playground where film, sex and innovation intersect.
Brussels is getting tougher
But the free market idyll is now being "disrupted" by a new player: the European Commission. Under the so-called Digital Services Act , it launched an investigation this year into the four biggest adult platforms - Pornhub, XVideos, XNXX and Stripchat. The aim is to ensure the protection of minors and age verification of users. The platforms face fines of up to six per cent of global revenues and, as two of these platforms are based in Prague, the regulation will fall directly on Czech companies. An industry that has long operated on the edge is becoming a regulated sector with obligations similar to social networks.
The silence under the surface that makes billions
Behind the facades of apartment blocks, in studios, even in inconspicuous offices in the centre, there is an industry that is making money for Prague, even if it is not talked about much. Adult content is not an official item in economic statistics, but the money that flows into the city is real.
Prague has become a place where film craft, digital innovation, openness and pragmatism meet. It's not a Las Vegas-style "sin city". Rather, it is a laboratory where the fusion of culture, business and technology is tested to see how far it can go.
Whichever way you look at it, one thing is certain: when pornography is filmed, streamed or distributed in Europe, the strings often lead to Prague, a metropolis that has learned to be both sinful and sophisticated at the same time - and which will now have to prove that it can play by a stricter set of rules.
