Young people are breaking down the boundaries of sexuality. Study shows Gen Z is dating across gender lines and rethinking their own orientation
While older generations often viewed sexuality as a fixed part of identity, Generation Z views it as a fluid and individually experienced aspect of life. A new report by Hinge, focusing on the dating habits of the LGBT+ community, reveals that 18 to 26-year-olds are significantly more open about attraction, relationships and gender identities than their older millennial counterparts.
According to the study, Generation Z is 21 percent more likely to date people with different gender expressions than Generation Y (ages 29-44). This suggests a shift toward greater respect for diversity and an emphasis on authenticity instead of predefined categories.
Sexuality as a fluid space
The report also found that queer Gen Z individuals who are actively seeking a partner are 22 percent more open to a sexual encounter with someone who is different from their usual gender interest. About 39 percent are also willing to reconsider their own sexual orientation in response to unexpected attraction. Compared to millennials, they are thus significantly more likely to move beyond rigid labels and open themselves up to new experiences.
The report also points to a shift toward slower dating - a trend that emphasizes building trust, emotional intimacy and authenticity. This trend has been evident in previous Hinge research and confirms that the queer community is seeking deeper connections now more than ever.
Inspiration for other generations
The results of the study are not entirely surprising. Long-term data, such as the UK census, shows that identification with the LGBT+ community is at an all-time high among young people. In the UK, 6.91 per cent of young people identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, according to the data - and these numbers are still rising.
The report concludes with a message that sums up the current mood in the queer community: 'The future of dating is fluid, vast and entirely up to us to define and redefine.' Generation Z has embraced this redefinition to the fullest - and in many ways is inspiring others to do the same.
