Crowds of tourists and temperatures soaring to uncomfortably high levels where even forty degrees Celsius in the shade is not bearable on the beach: these are the most common reasons why even die-hard beach lovers are changing their summer plans and heading north instead of lounging on the beach in southern Europe. So-called coolcations are one of the biggest trends changing travel. Experts are unclear whether this is just a fashion trend that will fade away in a few years or whether holidays in the north are the future of travel because of climate change. But what is certain is that holidays in Finland, Alaska or even Greenland are a hit this year.

Authoritarian regimes do not emerge overnight. They grow slowly, taking root in the daily silence, in the overlooking of small injustices, in the habit of not asking questions. It starts with the restriction of one group's rights - in the name of security, tradition or 'national identity'. But history teaches us that when the rights of some are diminished, others are soon affected. The first step towards unfreedom is often subtle, almost invisible, disguised as "normal measures". That is why it is necessary to be vigilant, to perceive even subtle changes and not to underestimate their consequences.

The year 2025 should be the year when we realise that passivity is the greatest ally of authoritarianism. Every voice that speaks out against injustice, every hand that carries a banner, every word that challenges a wrong decision - all of this is part of the defence of democracy. If we do not want to live in a world where fear drowns out freedom, we must be heard. Because it is when we speak out that silence becomes hope.

It is not necessary to be a hero. It is enough to be heard. Amnesty International is a symbol that words and actions matter. It fights where human rights are suffocating under the weight of injustice. But their work starts with us - with every individual who decides that freedom has meaning. Be a part of it. Join in.
