Let's fight for beauty and sensuality at every age, urges burlesque queen Dita Von Teese. She's coming to Prague with her show
The road to burlesque
Dita Von Teese is a dancer, performer, actress and designer who has succeeded in show business with a rather unconventional type of performance, burlesque. She began to devote herself to this art in 1992 and today she is (rightly) referred to as its queen. Dita Von Teese's unique show enjoys worldwide fame and next spring the Czech audience will have the opportunity to see this lady in action for the first time. Forget all your ideas about what stripping and eroticism is, it is Dita Von Teese who has created an original and unique genre that definitely offers more than just a waving naked body.
And where does one even get interested in such a specific artistic genre? "I was a very responsible teenager, at least when it came to work. I had a part-time job in a lingerie shop - and that was what foreshadowed my future career," the famous artist recalls in an interview, adding that it was lingerie that began to spark various fantasies in her.
"It wasn't until I was older that I understood the significance of these beautiful pieces of clothing, which had been mysterious to me until then, and which my mother also had in her drawer," adds Dita Von Teese, who is famous for her passion for corsets and luxury lingerie, which she also designs herself. And although she otherwise refers to herself as shy and coy and says that few who knew her growing up (including her younger self) could have imagined she would make a living dancing and stripping, today the whole world really knows her.
Nudity on a level
However, it is important not to confuse the classic strip shows with the performances that Dita Von Teese is involved in. Her performances are definitely not about classy nudity. Today, the artist herself talks openly about the problems of ageism (i.e. ageing, which is somehow "not worn" because it is not visually attractive), about the fact that everyone can be charming, regardless of their physical proportions or age. "Ageism, particularly targeted against women, will always be difficult to address. But we must stand up for beauty, sensuality and eroticism in all stages of life. Things are changing, of course, but I think of Madonna, J.Lo and how to work with female sensuality. We don't have to retire, we too can continue to evolve," she sums up.
Dita Von Teese's burlesque show is thus to some extent an activist show, and Dita herself openly talks about providing some inspiration for anyone who doesn't want to live the way they are expected to. She knows exactly what she is talking about. At 47, she has had a failed marriage to controversial singer Marilyn Manson, works in a specific sector of show business and has chosen not to have children. And her motto in life has changed from the classic idea of finding a husband and taking care of offspring with him to a simple idea - to take care of herself first and foremost.
Glamonatrix is coming to Prague
All these life insights are reflected in the current Glamonatrix world tour. With it, the queen of burlesque will visit Prague on 7 April 2020, straight to the historic Karlín Theatre. For the duration of the performance, the front part of the theatre will be transformed into a real luxury cabaret - visitors will be seated at small tables where they will be able to sip champagne just as is customary in cabarets.
