There is definitely no risk of boredom in Brno in summer. The centre will come alive with festivals, there will be a fireworks show and enthusiasts will be able to "follow the pea"
The summer months are classically a time when people enjoy holidays, go on long weekends, indulge in various cultural open air experiences or simply spend their free time with friends in cafes or restaurant gardens. Cities are also going into "summer mode" and are organising many events that attract not only their residents but also visitors from near and far to their centres. Brno is certainly no exception. Summer in Brno is practically a series of never-ending festivals. Thanks to them, it is possible to see and experience something interesting or unforgettable on practically every corner.
Follow the peas!
The festival, which is followed by a number of events this summer, is Mendel 200 - it will commemorate the significant jubilee of Gregor Johann Mendel, who would have celebrated his bicentenary this year and whose life and career are inextricably linked to Brno. In addition to a programme focusing on science, history or art, visitors can also look forward to a series of concerts. Not to be forgotten in connection with the personality of G. Mendel's famous experiments with peas, the description of which laid the foundations of modern genetics - and it is Mendel's work that will be commemorated by the so-called Pea Route, a "route" along which a seven-metre pea continuously moves, copying places connected with Mendel's life and work.
But the festival itinerary will also offer countless events for lovers of dance, music and great food. For example, the multi-genre music festival Marathon of Music Brno, the theatre festival Na plknech, pavžbě i trávě, which attracts a number of workshops for young and old, or the traditional international fireworks competition IGNIS BRUNENSIS, which this year will be held for the twenty-fifth time and the main part of the programme returns to the Brno Dam. And since it is necessary to regain strength between (festi)wars (you can find an overview of all other events here), lovers of delicious food and drink will certainly be pleased with the continuation of the Gourmet Brno project. This includes a number of venues across Brno (a list of which is also included in the Gourmet Brno guides available at tourist information centres) and is followed by Gourmet South Moravia with venues across the region. In the varied offer of cafés, restaurants, unconventional bistros or purely local pubs, etc., everyone will surely find their favourite.
And since summer also includes delicious ice cream, those who enjoy gastrotourism can head literally to Bozský Kopeček or to one of the branches of the Minach Chocolate Factory for great (and not only chocolate) ice cream.
A treat for the eye as well
Many people will also undoubtedly associate Brno with its industrial past, the remains of which can be admired even today as part of the Brno INdustrial project. In previous years, the project focused mainly on the textile history of Brno, which was also known as the Moravian Manchester, and those interested could go and explore the former textile factories. This year, however, the Brno Zbrojovka factory, a former Czechoslovak arms manufacturer but also a car manufacturer, is in the spotlight. After all, who wouldn't know the famous Zetor (the tractor that went to the mountains to plough potatoes...). However, Brno is not lacking in modern 20th century architecture either, from the most famous Villa Tugendhat, listed by UNESCO, to the newly renovated Avion hotel and the Czech Radio building or interesting residential districts.
Brno authentic and mysterious
Lovers of the mysterious and buildings that are not normally accessible will also find something to enjoy in Brno. TIC BRNO regularly organises so-called authentic tours presenting the city from a different perspective. Thanks to these tours, it is possible to discover forgotten places and locations that we often pass by unnoticed, although they are definitely worth seeing and visiting. These tours are regularly updated to reflect the seasons and a new feature is the various routes focusing on the Paths of the Third Resistance. Whether you want to explore Brno with the kids, venture out of the city, take a minibus ride along the scenic routes or go for a run around the exhibition centre, you're sure to find something to suit you. The Brno underground is also a big attraction - the Cellar under the New Town Hall will be opened in a completely new design and the Fire Horse and Dragon exhibition will present the history and legends of Brno in an interactive way. In the near future, the water reservoirs on the Yellow Hill will also be open to the public, but those interested will have to wait until autumn to visit them. In the meantime, there will be plenty of entertainment in Brno.
