Summer and HIV in the Czech Republic: 21 more HIV-positive patients in July, Czech AIDS Aid Society made a record number of anonymous tests in August 2021
The increase in HIV+ cases shows that people still underestimate prevention. This is an increase of 7 cases in the same seven-month period compared to last year. By the end of July 2021, a total of 3,990 people had been infected, 753 of them developed AIDS and 345 people died.
As of July 2021, 21 cases have been diagnosed; these are 17 men and 4 women. Sexual transmission was the predominant mode of transmission, with 15 cases, 10 of which involved men having sex with men. 1 transmission was through blood or blood products, 1 transmission by an injection drug user, and 4 cases had no identified cause. A total of 10 cases are from Prague, 3 from the Moravian-Silesian Region, 2 from the South Moravian Region and the Central Bohemian Region and 1 case each from the Olomouc, Zlín, Hradec Kralove and Pardubice Regions.
Czech AIDS Help Society tests
In the past month (August 2021), the Czech AIDS Aid Society conducted a record number of anonymous tests in its history. A total of 2027 people were tested at all sites and in the field in tents and 4 ambulances. Of these, 2005 were HIV tests, 1622 for syphilis, 478 for Hepatitis B and 1517 for Hepatitis C. A total of 7 clients were so-called reactive for HIV infection, 21 for syphilis, 2 for hepatitis B and 7 for hepatitis C. The actual diagnosis will only be confirmed by further testing.
How was last year? In 2020, the Czech AIDS Aid Society carried out 1690 tests, in 2019 1331, in 2018 1045 and in 2017 it was 978 tests.
