Politicians for LGBT rights. Zdeněk Hřib and Markéta Pekarová Adamová supported Prague Pride
This year's Prague Pride LGBT festival, which will take place without the traditional parade and under stricter pandemic measures, has been supported by the Prague City Council by flying a rainbow flag. Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) and Prague City Councillor for Culture Hana Třeštíková (Prague for herself) attended the festival, along with festival director Tom Bílý.
The Prague mayor has long supported the event, as did his predecessor, Adriana Krnáčová, who previously appeared at the head of the parade. In April, the Prague City Council approved financial support for the festival in the amount of CZK 650,000. The amount was supported by the coalition Pirates, the United Forces for Prague (TOP 09 and STAN) and Prague to Myself, and the subsidy was pushed through despite opposition from ANO and ODS and coalition councillor Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL). Tens of thousands of tourists come to Prague, we need everyone. Moreover, Prague Pride is not just a carnival parade, it is a week-long festival of tolerance and many educational events, lectures and workshops," Hřib defended the contribution. Prague Pride has now been supported by other politicians, such as Markéta Pekarová Adamová, the head of TOP 09 and leader of the SPOLU coalition's candidate list in Prague.
"Sexual orientation or gender identity must not be the target of attacks and hatred. We all deserve to be loved and accepted as we are. Tomorrow Prague Pride starts and I support it because I want to live in a tolerant country," the politician tweeted. In addition to her party boss, the festival was also supported by Jiří Pospíšil, an MEP and chairman of Prague's TOP 09 party. "Everyone has the right to freely express who they are! That should be the main idea of Prague Pride. Nothing more, nothing less... That it is not useless is proven by the statements of our President towards transgender people or the situation in Hungary. Respect for other people and for difference - that's what we sometimes lack..." Prague Pride was also supported by the state-owned Czech Post by colouring its logo in rainbow colours, and yesterday trams decorated with rainbow flags took to the streets of Prague, thus subsidising the event.
