"Half male, half female." Scientists have discovered a rare crab that shows that sex in nature is not black and white

A rare discovery from an Indian rainforest opens up a topic that goes far beyond the world of biology. The case of a crab with a combination of male and female traits shows how varied and sometimes surprisingly complex the very nature of sex can be.

In the remote forests of southern India, a discovery has been made that, while belonging to the world of biology, is surprisingly broader in scope. Scientists here have described a rare case of a crab whose body combines both male and female features. While the phenomenon known as gynandromorphy is not entirely unknown in nature, its occurrence is extremely rare - and in this particular species, it has been recorded for the first time.

A story from a place where nature works differently

The discovery comes from Silent Valley National Park in the Indian state of Kerala, one of the world's best-preserved tropical areas. This is also home to the freshwater crab Vela carli, which, unlike most of its relatives, chooses tree cavities as a refuge.

Scientists monitored 120 individuals during their research. But three of them showed something not commonly seen: their bodies bore the markings of both sexes at the same time. The combination of male reproductive structures and female traits, including gonopores, makes them a biological rarity.

The research was led by a team from the Centre for Conservation Ecology at MES Mampad College in collaboration with experts from the Zoological Survey of India.

What is gynandromorphism

While in humans the term intersex is used in similar cases, in the animal kingdom it is gynandromorphy that is being talked about. It is a condition in which an organism bears both male and female traits - sometimes symmetrically divided (for example, one half of the body is "male" and the other "female"), and sometimes scattered throughout the body.

In humans, the situation is more complex and more biologically and socially sensitive. The term intersex refers to people who are born with sex characteristics - chromosomal, hormonal or anatomical - that do not fit the typical definitions of male or female. It is not a uniform condition, but a wide range of variations that can manifest themselves in different ways: from differences in chromosomes to hormonal variations to differences in genital development. Some intersex variations are already apparent at birth, others become apparent only at puberty or even remain undetected for a long time.

While gynandromorphy in animals is primarily a biological phenomenon without a social dimension, in humans intersex is at the same time a medical, ethical and social issue. In recent years, for example, issues of bodily autonomy have been increasingly discussed, especially in the context of surgical procedures performed in childhood, or the need for greater awareness of and respect for bodily diversity.

The prevalence of these variations is not negligible - estimates vary according to definition, but intersex traits can occur in some form in approximately one to two per cent of the population. Yet the topic remains often neglected or simplified in the public sphere.

Gynandromorphy has been described in the past in butterflies, birds and other crustaceans, for example. But it always remains the exception rather than the rule. All the more interesting is its occurrence in a species in which it has not yet been recorded - and which thus reminds us once again that the diversity of nature and of human bodies takes on many more forms than it may at first appear.

Nature beyond simple definitions

Discoveries like these are a reminder that biological reality is often more complex than we commonly describe. Gender in nature is not always strictly binary, and there are various forms of transitions or combinations.

Scientific research is thus not only providing new insights into specific species, but also a broader view of how diverse the very principle of life can be. In the case of the inconspicuous Indian forest crab, this is further proof that nature rarely follows simple rules, and that even seemingly marginal discoveries can open up interesting questions about how the world around us actually works.
