Engineers have created a breathable and waterproof plaster that is also an interesting fashion accessory
Discomfort, itching, sweating and odor. These are just some of the unpleasant things that accompany a fracture of a limb "wrapped" in a classic plaster cast. Fractures take several weeks to months to heal, and with a classic cast come not only the aforementioned problems, but also difficulty showering and having to say goodbye to all water fun for a while. Although even on the Czech market today there are so called "plastic casts" which are waterproof, they still cover the limb with their entire surface, so the patient does not avoid all the other problems such as itching and excessive sweating of the covered area.
It is for these reasons that a group of American engineers from Chicago-based startup Cast21 decided to make life more comfortable for people with fractures. They have invented a cast that is not only functional, but also designer, and far more hygienic. Its layer is not solid, but offers many holes that allow the skin to breathe freely.
The Chicago-based startup Cast21 relies on a liquid resin that is cast directly on the hand, which then solidifies and holds the broken bone in the right position to heal as best and as soon as possible. The whole process only takes about ten minutes. You can also choose your favourite colour. Have you ever thought that even a cast for a broken arm can become an interesting fashion accessory?
