Heated Rivalry will return: we know when season 2 will arrive and what's next for Ilya and Shane
Queer hockey drama Heated Rivalry has been one of the biggest series surprises of recent months. What was originally an intimate Canadian production for Crave became a title picked up by HBO, and quickly found an audience far beyond the queer community. After the finale of the first season, fans are now left with one question: when and with what will the sequel return?
When will the second season arrive?
The second season is officially confirmed. Lead actors Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams made the announcement last December with a short video that quickly went viral on social media. HBO boss Casey Bloys, meanwhile, hinted in an interview with Deadline that a third season is even on the cards.
Director Jacob Tierney clarified the timeline this February - filming is set to begin in August 2026, with the premiere scheduled for April 2027. This finally puts an end to the initial speculation of a 2026 release. Tierney also stressed that he didn't want to rush the development of the script - he said the first series worked because of the careful work with pacing and emotion.
So the wait will be roughly 13 months, not several years as is usual with some other hit series.
What will the sequel be about?
The first series ended with a pivotal moment - Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander turning a secret post-match meeting into a more open relationship. During a weekend at the cabin, they professed their love, began referring to each other as partners, and also faced their first real risk of exposure - Shane's father caught them kissing, which led to coming out to his parents.
The series is based on the book series Game Changers by author Rachel Reid. While the first series adapted the second volume of the series, the sequel is set to take inspiration from the 2022 book The Long Game.
The latter follows Ilya and Shane a decade later. They are still together, but their relationship remains a secret from the public - from fans, the media and the league itself. Hiding the relationship for a long time becomes increasingly challenging, and the question of whether disclosure will destroy careers becomes a central dramatic motif.
Tierney confirmed that the focus will remain on the main couple, but also promises more room for other characters. Thus, the second season is not meant to be a romantic sequel, but a more complex look at queer identity in top professional sports.
Who will be back in front of the camera?
If Ilya and Shane are returning, so are Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams. As for the supporting characters, the situation is not yet definitively confirmed. Robbie GK as Kip Grady and François Arnaud as Scott Hunter have made a strong impression in the front row.
At the same time, fans are speculating about more involvement of Kyle Swift's character, portrayed by Matthew Finlan. In the book, his story has further developments, including a relationship line with veteran Eric Bennett - but that role has not yet been cast.
A new character could also be Troy Barrett from another installment in the series, whose storyline would open up another queer perspective in the professional hockey landscape. Casting for these roles has not yet been announced.
Tierney has also stated that he is interested in maintaining a predominantly Canadian cast. He said this is not only a matter of production terms, but also part of the authenticity that set the first series apart from mainstream Hollywood productions.
How many episodes and what format?
The second series should again have six episodes. The director has long been of the opinion that the compact format allows the intensity of the story to be maintained without unnecessarily loosening the plot.
Tierney will also return as director, but this time he will be working with another writer. HBO is not expected to interfere with the creative direction of the project, according to a statement from executives, so the series will remain primarily a Crave production.
Why is the second season so highly anticipated?
Heated Rivalry opened up a subject long overlooked in mainstream sports fiction - the relationship between two men at the peak of their professional careers who also function as media rivals. The combination of intimacy, pressure to perform, and public image created a tension that transcended queer audiences.
Thus, the sequel will not just be a romantic return of a popular couple, but a test of whether the series can continue to develop the theme of hidden identity in an environment traditionally associated with masculinity and heteronormative culture.
The second season of Heated Rivalry is scheduled to premiere in April 2027. Until then, the first season remains available on HBO, Crave and the NOW platform.
